Hello Parents

The second grade students are working hard in class.

The class Valentine parties will be held on Tuesday February 13th from 1:00 to 2:00. We will continue with party in a bag for snack. The students will pass out their valentine's during the party!

A shield form has been sent home. These will be hung up for Catholic Schools week starting on January 29th.

Next week we will begin having the students keep a reading log at home. They should read for at least 10 minutes and then write down on the log the name of the book. In a few weeks we will assign a book project.

In the curriculum:

Topic 9 covers subtraction with regrouping. Please have your child study the facts for fluency.

Chapter 15 covers the Eucharist. We will talk more about the sacrament later in the Spring when the students will receive the sacrament.

In unit 7 we cover multi syllabic words. The 3 type of syllables we have covered so far are: closed syllables, v-e syllables and open syllables. Please continue to study the trick words.

In science the students have been learning about Balance and Motion. Pictures of the children will be posted next week.

Second Grade has been working hard on the following:

Math: Mental Subtraction; finding parts of 100, subtracting on a hundreds chart, subtracting multiples of 10, problem solving with missing or extra information.  We will be testing this Friday.  Our next topic will be adding 2 digit numbers.  It is important that students continue to study their math facts.

Phonics: We have begun the unit on long vowels words that follow the patter of vowel-consonant-e (v-e).  New trick words include: move, only, house

Religion: Students created their own advent wreaths and brought them home.  In class, we are learning about Advent.  We will continue to learn about reconciliation and forgiveness in preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Father Chip will be visiting our classroom to answer questions.

Science: We are learning about sound vibrations.  Students created their own musical instruments.

Mass on Friday will be to honor Mary and is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.  It is an early dismissal day for students.

Hello Parents,

The students have been working hard in second grade! We all enjoyed the Halloween party and thank all the parents who helped to make it so much fun! We will be going on our field trip to the Mapparium this Thursday. Children should wear their gym uniform and bring a bag lunch.

We will finish Topic 5 this week and begin Topic 6 which covers Mental Addition. Please continue to have your children review the addition and subtraction facts nightly.

Topic 5 will cover two syllable words, compound words and new suffixes and prefixes. Students should review the trick words nightly.

The children are enjoying reading their leveled guided reading books. We also have added a new reading program called Rooted in Reading which is a read aloud book with comprehension, grammar and vocabulary skills.

We have begun the second unit which will cover the sacrament of Reconciliation. Children making the sacrament should have signed up for a date in January.

Thanksgiving crafts will be held on November 15th from 9 to 11. We are still in need of more helpers so please check the sign up genius. It's a great way to get service hours!
